So, the results.
As you know I didn't learn weaving from a live human being per se; I taught myself from books, and a few then-Majordomo list members helped me. No YouTube back then. I just did what came natural to me; I'm right handed, so I start from the right. But I found this an interesting question to ask, as we never seem to talk about it; do we all assume others do the same as us, or because it doesn't matter one way or another? Any thoughts?
Thank you for participating in the survey!
Interesting! It does seem easier to just start from the side of your dominant hand. But it's interesting that substantial numbers of weavers start on the opposite side.
ReplyDeleteI learned from books too. The big artifact of that is that I number my treadles the opposite of most other people I know. Not a problem, except in round robin workshops where my loom feels backwards to everyone else.

I know, 20-25%, both camps.
ReplyDeleteI had a similar experience like that when I inherited a table loom - I can't remember how it went, but it took a while to get used to it.
I frequently start from the left because I designate 1 and 2 or 1 and 6 as my tabby treadles. Left treadle, left hand; right treadle, right hand.
