Thank you, to everybody who contacted me about the earthquake in Christchurch. We are sufficiently removed from the quake center that we did not even know about it until my parents rang from Japan this morning. From reports on the radio, it appears some buildings and roads were damaged, electricity and therefore communication iffy, but there seems to be, thus far, not a lot of injuries.
Nelson is just a little windy, proof spring is upon us, and there is a fresh dump of snow on the hills, but otherwise is experiencing a crisp sunny morning.

[EDIT] Tapestry artist Marilyn Rea-Menzies writes: "Thank you people. We are fine. My old house weathers this sort of stuff very well. Not sure how the studio is. Haven't talked to Anne (Field)yet as I'm not sure if her power is on or not.
"I was in the Inangahua earthquake years ago, 1968 I think, and this quake is quite similar. It started out quite light and slowly built up into a full blow heavy shake. I stood under a door and was lucky that none of my bookshelves fell over, only a few knick knacks fell and got broken, so not so bad. The water and sewerage in the city might be a problem for a while."
[EDIT] Sonya, of Insanity Looms, writes she has some clean up to do, but did not suffer serious damages, and the looms are standing pretty.

Woke to see the news on TV at 5.30am. Poor old Christchurch and Selwyn district. I have friends close to the epicentre who've had a lot of damage to their homes, others left unscathed. Very frightening. Glad Nelson, Blenheim & Picton are out of range. XO
Thanks, everyone. Our TV started to cover it from mid-morning. There is pretty bad damage to buildings, roads and bridges, but so far no casualty; two serious injuries, but considering the quake was about the same size or bigger than Haiti, and the old Napier Earthquake, many are saying how lucky we/they've been.
The implication for us is, since almost every single item we use in our every day lives are trucked from Chch, and the major supermarkets' warehouses plus a bridge (?) and the road out of Chch have been damaged, the cost of living in Nelson will go up a bit, and some merchandises may not be available for a while. So we just came home from the Supermarket stocked with stackable food items, water, and TP.
So far, Chch had much better weather than forecast today, but it might be a cold night tonight. I hope the forecast turns out to be wrong. Again.

Goooooodness me, hello, Rita. Thanks for dropping by - we're all fine. Interesting to see that some town very near the epicenter came out almost unscathed, while some towns in the middle of the North Island had some damage!

I'm so pleased you're all OK. I've been away from my computer and locked in a conference so didn't even hear about the earthquake until three days after it happened. It didn't stop me thinking about you!
Thanks, G! It's amazing, we now had a small one near Gisbourne, and yesterday, another one in Wellington, from memory. None as big as the one in Chch, of course.
Yes, we do live on the fault line.
